YAROVIT TRUCKS PRODUCTION

YAROVIT Trucks Design Ideology

S.V. Sosinovich, Chief Designer

YAROVIT trucks are vehicles designed to operate in extremely hard road and climatic conditions, whose design enables to ensure the superior load-carrying capacity indicators while meeting all the requirements of the UN EEC for Category 3 transportation means.

On analyzing the trends of the world, first and foremost European, motor-car making, one can come to a conclusion that the last 2-3 years witness the ever more frequent attempts by major (mass) producers of trucks to present themselves in the HEAVY DUTY trucks market segment, which hitherto had been the field of activity of specialized producers, and such trucks had been something like vehicles exclusively prepared for specific operating conditions on the customer’s orders.

On the one hand, this sounds ominous for the European frequenters of the “HEAVY DUTY” club that manufacture special-design vehicles calculated to carry larger payloads in adverse road and climatic conditions; on the other hand, the interest of big companies in this market segment testifies to the growing demand for and diversified specialization of trucking. The numbers of users of such trucks increase, and the once limited and clearly defined segment of heavy duty trucks has started to inflate and wash away its boundaries.

Today, practically all the European producers have such a segment within their truck lines. Some producers limit themselves to creating specially prepared reinforced vehicle versions for grueling operating conditions and heavier payloads on the basis of series-produced models. Others, in addition to such “boosted” stock-produced versions, build trucks featuring specially modified design of the vehicle main systems (rear axles (shafts) tridem, the steering driving the rear axles, hydropneumatic suspensions, etc.).

Naturally enough, the interest has started to grow in veterans of this market segment, such companies as Terberg, Ginaf, Sisu. According to the available information, major truck manufacturers trying to create their own HEAVY DUTY trucks borrow design ideas and developments from these companies. As a rule, this is effected through engineering cooperation and purchases of licenses for the already developed and tested systems.

However, as always happens in the process of dynamic changes on a certain market segment, the term HEAVY DUTY TRUCK or “Off-Roadster” is often used incorrectly by truck makers both in Europe (in a lesser degree) and especially in the CIS. In trying to find their own place on the dynamically changing market, numerous producers rush to put this serious label on their series-produced vehicles once those become all-wheel-drive ones or receive an additional steering axle, or reinforced suspension, etc.

Thus, the first and most important feature of a HEAVY DUTY truck is the special design of the vehicle systems enabling it to:

- Retain the designed proportionate distribution of the load on axles in any situation of the vehicle movement, thus ensuring constant hold of all the vehicle wheels on the road both on the move and during unloading/loading operations;

- Ensure high cross-country capacity and tractive force of the vehicle operating as part of a super-heavy truck-train;

- Step up the truck maneuverability;

- Ensure that the vehicle stay steerable irrespective of the load and enable driver control of such a truck at any moment in real time;

- Mount any rigging whereby power takeoff is provided from the truck aggregates, based on a wide array of wheel formulae, engines, transmissions, cabs, frames, suspensions;

- Meet all the requirements for dimension limitations valid for public roads.

The second in importance, but also indispensable not only for special trucks feature, is conformity of the main systems and units to all the above-enumerated requirements.

We were guided exactly by these initial requirements and objectives when determining the strategy of launching and developing the YAROVIT truck line. The strategy stipulates for developing simultaneously two directions in creating HEAVY DUTY trucks: the “reinforced” series-production vehicle and the specially designed vehicle.

Variant One Trucks of from 6x4 to 8x8 wheel formulae. The front and rear suspensions are of classical design: i.e. the front and rear tandem, the rear axle with a balancing link. Possibility of installing a pneumatic suspension is foreseen. Front axles (shafts) are steerable by rigid mechanical kinematics. Three versions of the cab setup solutions and its placement depending on the outrigger equipment are envisaged: the cabover, the forward cab and the conventional (hooded engine) setup. The trucks can have either two-tire or single-tire wheels. A wide array of power and transmission trains by various producers can be optionally installed.

Variant Two Trucks of from 6x4 to 10x8 wheel formulae. The characteristic feature of these trucks is that there is no clear distinction between front and rear axle suspensions. The suspensions represent separate independent modules equipped with pneumatic (hydro-pneumatic) elements and original guiding devices. Such a design enables to create any wheel formulae with the maximum degree of standardization and meet any client’s requirements as to distribution of the weight on the truck axles. A wide assortment of the steering kinematic circuits will be offered, including that of an active drive on rear axles (shafts). The same as for the first variant, a wide spectrum of main aggregates and units by various producers can be selected, combined with various cab versions.

Thus the YAROVIT truck line combines both trends of the HEAVY DUTY design adopted in Europe and the CIS. Yet, there is no clear-cut boundary: several components are applicable in both designs, which is always an advantage of such a vehicle over competitors in the same market segment and serves to diversify the assortment of the products offered for sale.

The use of both the design setups in one vehicle calls for special care and responsibility in the process of selecting the components employed. It is necessary to provide a wide choice of the main aggregates without compromising the vehicle design and its operational characteristics.

Main emphasis in selecting the components is made on high-quality units and parts by the world’s leading manufacturers. However, both the truck market and the truck components market are currently offered the products developed on the basis of series-production prototypes subjected to various design modifications so as to function in especially hard conditions of operation (i.e. modified for HEAVY DUTY use), as well as products offered by manufacturers that specialize exclusively in components made for HEAVY DUTY vehicles.

Engines:

The ideology of AROVIT trucks outfitting with engines is based primarily on taking into account the customer’s opinion and his wishes as to organization of servicing. We are not bound to any “traditional” manufacturer and, all the more so, we do not have “our own” engine. The world automobile building experience proves that only narrow specialization on one concrete segment of the automotive components market will enable the producer to achieve high quality and superior consumer properties of the product. Thus, having selected such renowned companies specializing in truck engines as Deutz, Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, we can talk about at least two serious advantages over our competitors:

- The widest selection of models and power ratings meeting any requirements;

Taking into account the wide usage of these engines with various special-purpose equipment that our potential customers employ, we do not break the customary servicing chain of the user enterprise.

Transmissions:

Whereas the gearboxes we use (including automatic ones) are the same as with all other European truck producers in this class, transfer cases and driving axles (not to confuse with driving shafts) are a matter of our special pride. As suppliers of this equipment, we choose only the state-of-the-art producers making transmissions for HEAVY DUTY trucks, such as ZF-Steyr, Sisu Axle, Axletech. These aggregates have been designed and developed specifically for onerous road conditions and operation under heavy loads. Thus, carrying capacity of the driving axles used by YAROVIT Motors starts from 13 tons, which is the limit for most our competitors. The maximum admissible load for the driving axles we are using is within the range of 16 to 25 tons, and that of the shafts is 10 – 13 tons.

Steering:

The steering design used by YAROVIT Motors to day has no equivalents among the competitors. This is our own development, which enables to retain full control of the super-heavy truck in any emergency situation or on extremely bad roads. In any operating mode the force applied on the steering wheel does not exceed 12 kgf. And this is valid for the load of 13 tons on the driving axles!

Undoubtedly, all the components and materials are accessible to all motor-car makers, however, the task of the designer consists in providing for the maximum array of combinations of these components depending on the requirements of the wide spectrum of customers, and in carrying through all the technical certifications, computations and setup design. It is exactly in this field that YAROVIT Motors has unquestionable advantages over competitors, consisting in the following:

- Designing a new truck family always starts based on the principle of from complex to simple, i.e. from a special-purpose vehicle to a utility vehicle. This principle makes it possible to always offer an individual approach for the customer in resolving his specific tasks. Most competitors in this market segment offer trucks “retrofitted” from series-produced ones (built from series-produced components). Such an approach results in a limited selection of components and their combinations and, therefore, narrows down the producer’s possibilities, or forces the latter to raise prices and terms of fulfillment of such a special order;

- Absence of stereotyped thinking on the part of the designer. The designer is not “constrained’ within the limits of mass production and series-type designing. Each new task is approached with a high degree of creativity. Everything is done to resolve the mission assigned and to offer a whole array of proposals to the customer.
